What’s new with PlayStation 5: New PS VR2, PS5 and PS4 games announced

PlayStation 5

The PlayStation 5 has been a resounding success since launch and shows no signs of slowing down. As a result, the hardware has broken multiple sales records to become the fastest selling home video game console of all time. Here at Best Buy we have created your one and only stop for all the latest and greatest news on PlayStation 5.

Recently, Sony achieved a major milestone with over 10 million PS5 units sold. Looking ahead to the fall / winter release schedule PlayStation is poised to keep momentum strong into 2022. There are many exciting titles coming to the PS5, here are some of the biggest upcoming games and accessories for the platform.

New PS VR 2, PS5 and PS4 games announced for 2023

While there is no E3 this year, it didn’t stop PlayStation from announcing upcoming PS VR2 games and giving updates on other titles coming to PS5 and PS4. Let’s take a look at some of the highlights from June’s PlayStation State of Play digital event.

PS VR2 games shown coming in 2023

Earlier this year the PS VR2 was officially announced and we got a glimpse of the hardware. While no release date has been announced, during today’s State of Play several new PS VR2 games were announced and shown. Resident Evil Village, No Man’s Sky, and The Walking Dead Saints & Sinners Chapter 2 Retribution were all announced for PS VR2. Coming in 2023, each game is set to take advantage of the PS VR2’s special features.

This includes the headset’s 4K HDR display, eye tracking, 3D audio and the PS VR2 Sense controllers. To get a sense of the immersion these games offer, we learned that in Resident Evil Village each PS VR2 Sense controller represents a hand in-game. Guarding using both of your arms in real life with the controllers, makes Ethan guard in the same way in-game. Furthermore, you can now perform dynamic actions such as firing your gun while holding a knife with the other hand.

Horizon Call of the Mountain

Guerrilla also showed off a new trailer for their upcoming PS VR2 game, Horizon Call of the Mountain. In this game, you take on the role of Ryas, a former Shadow Carja Warrior who hopes to redeem himself by investigating a new threat to the Sundom. Seeing the spectacular world through his eyes you’ll be climbing, scaling mountains and taking down mighty Thunderjaws in a first-person view.

Alongside the game’s main story, the game includes an immersive River Ride experience. In this mode, you’ll enjoy the gorgeous views of the world of Horizon as you make your way down the river. You’ll have to keep a sharp watch as some uninvited machines may try to come aboard!

Games coming to PS5 and PS4 in 2023

Capcom also showed off the often rumored Resident Evil 4 remake, which includes PS VR2 content in the game. Resident Evil 4 remake is scheduled to launch March 24, 2023 for PS5. The beloved Street Fighter series is back with Street Fighter 6. Capcom is calling this a classic Street Fighter built for a modern era. Street Fighter 6 will include modes from previous games and include two new modes, World Tour and Battle Hub. Street Fighter 6 is coming to PS5 and PS4 sometime in 2023.

Finally, a brand new trailer for Final Fantasy XVI was revealed. The game is set to launch Summer 2023 on PS5 and based upon the trailer it looks like it will be worth the wait.

Update on PS5 games from Japanese developers

PlayStation hosted a 20 minute State of Play digital event. It focused on highlighting great games coming from some of Play station’s beloved Japanese publishers. Surprisingly, the event was packed with a lot of information including the announcement of a new co-op and Tower of Sisyphus mode in Returnal, a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles collection and more.

Let’s take a look at some of the highlights of today’s State of Play!

Ghostwire: Tokyo

Tango Gameworks revealed the launch trailer for their upcoming game, Ghostwire: Tokyo. It offered an exciting preview of the mystical action and fascinating world that players will be able to get their hands on when the game launches on PlayStation 5 in a few weeks on March 25, 2022.

Ghostwire: Tokyo is an action-adventure game developed by Tango Gameworks and published by Bethesda. It challenges you to master the powerful arts of Ethereal Weaving while working to defeat Hannya and his followers, the Visitors, who have invaded Tokyo. These supernatural entities roam the world of Ghostwire, which create a stunning atmosphere.

Valkyrie Elysium

Square Enix announced Valkyrie Elysium, an all-new action-RPG in the VALKYRIE series, is coming to PS5 and PS4 this year. We got a first glimpse of the game’s protagonist, a young Valkyrie who is entrusted with the fate of the world by the All-Father, the highest of gods and ruler of all creation.

We also learned that she will face various enemies on her journey and she must use a variety of weapons, magic and the power of her allies to prevent Ragnarok—the destruction of the world. Valkyrie Elysium drives the series forward in a fresh, new direction with classic combat mechanics, such as finishing moves and combo systems, reimagined for an action-RPG.

Forspoken

We learned that Forspoken, Square Enix and Luminous Productions upcoming action role-playing game is being delayed until October 11, 2022. However, a new gameplay was shown at today’s State of Play. The trailer showcased Frey’s, the games protagonist, newfound confidence as she rises to the challenge to save Athia and its people, and the trials she faces along the way.

Additionally, we got a closer look at some of the magical abilities Frey learns along her journey. These powers include “Storm Dart,” which enables players to emit electrical energy during battle, as well as the ability to command barriers of water with the “Eagre” move. We also saw the devastating impact of the “Break” in Athia, a devastating miasma that corrupts everything it touches, including humans and animals.

Furthermore, we got to see the fierce Dragon that “welcomes” Frey to Athia, in addition to Frey’s fast-paced magic parkour and combat skills as she evades the fearsome creature’s brute-force attacks during an intense confrontation.

First look at the design of the PlayStation VR2

PlayStation are slowly revealing details on their next-generation virtual reality headset, PlayStation VR2. We now know exactly what the PlayStation VR successor will look like, along with the PlayStation VR2 Sense controller. And, the Senior Vice President Platform Experience Hideaki Nishino gave us insight on some of the design decisions.

One of the first things you’ll notice is that the PS VR2 headset and PS VR2 Sense controller have a matching “orb” look. This was done to represent the 360-degree view players will experience when they use the PS VR2.

The design of the PS VR2 headset was also inspired by the look of the PS5 family of products. Whereas the PS5 has flat edges, the PS VR2 headset is more round like the DualSense controller and Pulse 3D headset since it involves more human interaction.

Additionally, close attention to the ergonomics of the PS VR2 headset and extensive testing to ensure a comfortable feel for a variety of head sizes was completed. Original PlayStation VR features such as the headset’s adjustable scope and placement of the stereo headphone jack are the same.

Additional improvements include a lens adjustment dial, so users have an option to match the lens distance between their eyes to optimize their view. Moreover, the PS VR2 headset is slimmer than the PS VR and weighs slightly less. Furthermore, a new vent design for the PS VR2 headset has been implemented that will avoid having the lens fog up on gamers while playing.

Finally, PlayStation announced that PS VR2 development kits are in the hands of developers now! While there is no set release date for PS VR2, some industry experts are expecting a release in late 2022.

In-depth look at modes and features of Gran Turismo 7

Ahead of its March 4, 2022 launch, PlayStation has release 30 minutes of new PlayStation 5 gameplay as well as an in-depth look at modes and features of Gran Turismo 7. From the 30 minutes of footage its clear that Gran Turismo 7 has something for gamers of all abilities and ages.

Several modes were shown, let’s take a quick look at some of the modes shown during the presentation.

Music Rally

Great for new players, Music Rally is an arcade-style race where you enjoy some up-tempo and motivating music while you race to reach checkpoints before time runs out. This is a great way to get familiar with Gran Turismo 7’s driving simulation gameplay and an opportunity to set your steering and pedal operation type and driving assist presets (Auto Brakes, Braking Zones, Driving Lines, etc.).

Cafe

The cafe offers players “Menu Books” of activities to complete for new cars and other game-progression items. Your first Menu Book request is to acquire three Japanese compact cars, one of which you already purchased earlier in the game. You can obtain the other two cars by winning them from specific races in the Menu Book. Meet the placement criteria and the two remaining cars are yours.

License Centre

The License Centre features challenging driving tests all over the world. Getting licenses teaches players valuable skills that will help you throughout the many races and challenges in the game.

Tuning

As with previous Gran Turismo games, tuning your car is very important. The garage is loaded with parts of all shapes and sizes, with even more unlocked as you play. As you acquire new cars, you build up your Collector Level and hitting level 4 unlocks the “Club Sports” category in the Tuning Shop.

These are just a few of the features that are contained in Gran Turismo 7. Look for a full review of GT7 here on the Best Buy Blog in March!

Over the past few months, PlayStation has been relatively quiet when it comes to news about upcoming games. That all changed today! In a roughly 40 minute digital presentation, Sony gave updates on games from PlayStation Studios and key third party publishers. Insomniac Games / Sony Interactive Entertainment

Insomniac Games has been on a roll recently with Marvel’s Spider-Man, Spider-Man Miles Morales and Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart. It was only a matter of time before the next Spider-Man game was announced and today that happened. Spider-Man 2, coming exclusively to PS5 in 2023, continues the story of both Peter Parker and Miles Morales in a single-player adventure.

The footage shown was just a glimpse of what’s to come. Much of the development team from Marvel’s Spider-Man is working on the game and the same voice actors for both Peter and Miles are returning. During the minute and a half trailer, we got to see some of the new abilities and suits that will be in the game. And, during the final few seconds of the trailer, Venom was shown.

Quite possibly the biggest surprise of the PlayStation Showcase 2021 was the announcement of Marvel’s Wolverine by Insomniac Games. This is a standalone game that is being directed by Brian Horton and Camera Christian, who recently led the creative efforts on Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Not a whole lot is known about the game as the announcement teaser showed a brief cutscene of walking up to an individual in the bar and then realizing it was Wolverine. The game is early in development and will be a PS5 exclusive.

Transferring PS4 digital games and game saves to PlayStation 5

Sony further outlined the process of transferring digital games, game data and game saves from your PS4 to your PS5. This is done by using an ethernet cable or by connecting with WiFi. And, PS Plus members can sync PS4 game saves onto PS5 through cloud storage.

It’s important to note that if you have games or game data on an external USB drive, you can bring them over to your PS5 with that drive. Finally, Sony noted that the ability to transfer game saves between the PS4 version of a game and the PS5 version is up to each developer.

PS4 peripherals & accessories backwards compatibility

Many have been wondering about what existing PS4 peripherals and accessories will work on PS5. Sony made an official announcement regarding compatibility. However, the biggest bit of news out of the announcement was that DualShock 4 controllers can only be used to play PS4 games.

  • Speciality peripherals, such as officially licensed racing wheels, arcade sticks, and flight sticks, will work with PS5 games and supported PS4 games.
  • The Platinum and Gold Wireless Headsets, as well as third-party headsets that connect via USB port or audio jack, will work on PS5 (the headset companion app is not compatible with PS5).
  • The DualShock 4 wireless controller and PlayStation officially licensed third-party gamepad controllers will work with supported PS4 games.
  • Both the PS Move Motion Controllers and the PlayStation VR Aim Controller will work with supported PS VR games on PS5.
  • The PlayStation Camera will work with PS5 for playing supported PS VR games. It will require an adaptor that Sony will provide at no additional cost to PS VR users. Details on how to get the adaptor will be announced later.
